A New Beginning for Sangeeta Rabha

Sangeeta Rabha

In the small village of Mataikhar, Kamrup, Assam, lived a kind woman named Sangeeta Rabha. She was 33 years old and had a life-changing story to tell. For a long time, Sangeeta faced a tough challenge. She had a severe mental illness that caused her to have frequent and unpredictable seizures. During these seizures, she would fall unconscious, and her body would shake uncontrollably. This condition made everyday activities very hard for Sangeeta and caused a lot of worry for her family. Sangeeta’s family loved her very much and tried everything to help her. They visited many hospitals, tried traditional remedies, and even followed some superstitious practices. Despite all their efforts, nothing seemed to work. Sangeeta’s condition showed everyone just how important professional mental health care is. However, getting such care was not easy. There was a lot of stigma around mental health, people were not very aware of it, and there were financial challenges too. Moreover, living in a remote village made it even harder for Sangeeta to access mental health facilities.

But in 2020, a ray of hope appeared. Sangeeta’s family heard about the Mental Illness Treatment in Assam (MITA) Camp, an initiative by the DiYA Foundation. This camp was dedicated to treating mental illness. Despite having some doubts and facing challenges in getting there, Sangeeta’s family decided to take her to the MITA camp. At the MITA Camp, Sangeeta’s life began to change. She received complete mental health care, including medical treatment, counseling, and regular follow-ups. She was given an accurate diagnosis, and the doctors created a special treatment plan just for her. A dedicated team of psychiatrists and support staff worked closely with Sangeeta, offering kind and compassionate care that was crucial for her recovery. Sangeeta’s family also played a big part in her journey. They attended counseling sessions and learned how to manage her condition. Their constant support was key to her progress. At first, the community was doubtful and skeptical, but as they saw the remarkable changes in Sangeeta’s condition, they became more accepting and supportive. Slowly but surely, Sangeeta’s seizures became less frequent and severe. She gained control over her physical movements, and her overall mental health improved significantly. She continued to receive ongoing support from the MITA Camp, which was a great help.

Sangeeta’s story teaches us many important lessons. It shows us that with the right help and support, even the toughest challenges can be overcome. It also reminds us that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that everyone deserves access to proper care. Sangeeta’s journey is a beautiful example of resilience and the power of community support.

Thanks to the MITA Camp and her loving family, Sangeeta now lives a happier and healthier life. She can take care of her children and do the things she loves. Her story has inspired many others in her village to seek help for their mental health issues. Sangeeta’s new beginning is a reminder that no matter how difficult things may seem, there is always hope and a chance for a better tomorrow.

She said, “My journey has been incredible, and I am profoundly grateful. The MITA Camp gave me a new lease on life. Now, I can be the mother my children need and the person I want to be, no longer defined by my illness. The positive changes in my health brought immense relief to my family, easing the emotional and financial strain we had been under. Our household dynamic improved as I regained my independence, and I noticed the community’s perception of mental illness beginning to shift. Inspired by my success, more people became open to seeking help for their mental health issues.”
