Education

In the forest villages and tea gardens of Kamrup District, Assam, the Diya Foundation has taken up the noble task of addressing the educational challenges faced by marginalized communities, including the Rabha, Bodo, Garo, Tea tribe, and Assamese general populations. Through a comprehensive education program, the foundation aims to combat low literacy rates, high absenteeism, and school dropouts prevalent in the region. By actively engaging with the local community and implementing targeted interventions, Diya Foundation has made remarkable progress in empowering children and enhancing the quality of education in the area.

Sensitization and Stakeholder Engagement:

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the Diya Foundation has organized sensitization meetings and engaged with various stakeholders to foster a supportive educational environment. Youth clubs, Panchayat leaders, retired teachers, and influential individuals in the villages have been actively involved in these initiatives. Through one-on-one meetings with students, guardians, and teachers, as well as collaboration with local student bodies and School Management Committees (SMCs), Diya Foundation has effectively raised awareness about the significance of education and the need for active participation from all stakeholders.

Targeted Intervention in Primary Schools:

Diya Foundation has made significant strides by directly working with 23 primary schools spread across 25 villages in Kamrup District. These schools, situated within a 13-kilometer radius of the foundation’s office, cater to 931 children aged 6-11 years, studying in grades 1 to 5. By providing targeted support, the foundation has created a nurturing and conducive learning environment for these children.

Improving Attendance and Reducing Dropout Rates:

One of the key accomplishments of Diya Foundation’s program is the substantial improvement in attendance rates and reduction in school dropouts. Through their concerted efforts, they have effectively communicated the importance of education to the guardians, emphasizing the long-term benefits for their children’s future. By addressing the specific challenges that contribute to absenteeism and dropout rates, such as poverty, lack of awareness, and inadequate infrastructure, the foundation has managed to create a positive impact on children’s educational journeys.

Enhancing Education Quality:

Diya Foundation understands that the quality of education is vital for the holistic development of children. They have taken measures to enhance the teaching-learning process by organizing capacity-building workshops for teachers, providing them with pedagogical training, and sharing innovative teaching methodologies. By improving teachers’ skills and knowledge, the foundation has ensured a more engaging and effective learning experience for the students.

Long-term Sustainability:

The Diya Foundation’s education program has not only brought immediate improvements but has also laid the foundation for long-term sustainability. By actively involving the local community and building their capacity, the foundation has created a sense of ownership and responsibility towards education. This sustainable approach ensures that the positive changes brought about by the program will continue to benefit generations to come.
